A good night's sleep with roller shutters

15 March was this year’s World Sleep Day, designed to raise awareness of sleep as a human privilege that is often compromised by the habits of modern life. The quality of our sleep does, indeed, have a big impact on our health, our alertness and our productivity.

Would you like to sleep better? Roller shutters can be part of the solution; there are three important reasons for this.

You sleep better in the dark

Studies show that we sleep better in the dark. From an evolutionary perspective, our biological clock tells us to wake up when the sun rises and to go to sleep when the sun sets.

However, modern society no longer allows us to follow the rhythm of the sun. We have to get up early before dawn in order to beat the traffic jams or to bring the kids to school. And during Winter it’s often already dark by the time we get home.

When there is no sunshine, we deal with vast quantities of artificial light: at home, in the office, in the public space.

All this artificial light fools our biological clock into believing that it’s still day, so it can adjust to our modern way of living and essentially extend our days.

When we then finally do go to bed, the environment should be aligned with our biological clock. Meaning: it’s vital that we sleep in the dark.

Darkening your bedroom with the help of roller shutters enhances the quality of your sleep. Your body will then produce sufficient melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles. With roller shutters, the light from street lamps and cars does not enter your bedroom and you will enjoy a better night’s sleep.

Likewise, when you open the roller shutters in the morning, your body will quickly absorb lots of light and smoothly switch to its day-cycle. You will feel rested and with lots of energy to start the day.

You sleep better when it's quiet

Ambient noise is an ever increasing problem in modern society. In urban areas in particular, it is never really quiet. There is always a car door slamming or voices to be heard.

But even in more rural areas, it may get noisy at night: dogs barking, winds blowing, raindrops falling on the windows,…

All this noise can hamper your sleep. And that is not good, as studies show that you sleep better when it’s quiet. Roller shutters massively improve this situation as they can decrease ambient noise entering your bedroom by as much as a factor 8 !

You sleep better when it's cool

The ideal temperature for a good night’s rest is between 16 and 18°C. Many bedrooms are simply too warm. During Summer, many people don’t sleep well because their bedroom can’t cool off enough at the end of a warm day.

If your bedroom is too warm for a good night’s sleep, your body will require extra energy to get through the day. A few warm nights in a row and you’ll end up accumulating fatigue.

This is another area where roller shutters can do wonders. On hot days, simply keep your roller shutters down. That way, the heat will stay outside and your bedroom will remain refreshingly cool, which will result in you sleeping better.

Right, I can keep the roller shutters of my bedroom down day and night during Summer, but what about ventilation then? That’s where Wilms’ Rolvent® comes in. Rolvent® is a unique built-on roller shutter with integrated ventilation, which ensures that your bedroom remains well ventilated even when the roller shutter is down.
