This question is a classic one we get asked at Wilms: should I opt for roller shutters or are screens better for me ? In this blog, we compare the upsides and downsides of both systems. This will help you in making your choice. But first you need to ask yourself a few questions:

Do you want to keep the sun outside or is privacy your main concern?

Screens mainly serve to keep the sun out. They primarily act as sun-protection. However, this is already a first difference between screens and roller shutters. Screens avoid the house from overheating but they do not shield the house. When inside your home, you can still look outside and enjoy your garden.

Roller shutters, however, do allow you to darken the interior of your home and close it off from the outside world. The sun will not get into your house, but you will no longer be able to look outside. Obviously, the same applies in the other direction: from the outside, no one will be able to look into your home. Roller shutters thus protect your privacy.

What about insulation?

This is another difference between roller shutters and screens. Sure, screens keep the sunlight out and thus keep the house pleasantly cool on hot Summer days. But, other than that, screens do not really insulate.

Roller shutters do insulate. During Summer, they keep
the heat out. During Winter, they prevent the cold from entering your home.

What feels safer?

Safety is another criterion to choose between roller shutters and screens. Here, the difference is crystal-clear: roller shutters deter burglars, screens hardly do. All it takes is a knife to cut through the fabric of the screen. If protection against burglars is important to you, roller shutters are clearly the best option.

How big are the windows?

The last factor to play a role in your choice between roller shutters and screens is how big the windows of your house are. The maximum size of roller shutters depends on the slats. 39 mm slats allow you to cover 12 m². For bigger windows, two boxes can be joined, giving you two separate roller shutters. Screens can go up to a 6 meter width or height and can cover up to 20 m².

Characteristics of roller shutters

  • Protect your privacy
  • Insulate
  • Burglary deterrent
  • Less suitable for very big windows

Characteristics of screens

  • Still possible to look outside, but also to look inside
  • Simple and dynamic automation
  • Can cover large windows
